| Cablevision to Launch Regional Wireless Internet Access |

Cablevision Systems, which now owns Newsday this week, has announced that it would launch a reginoal-wide wireless internet access. According to Newsday, Cablevision will spend $300 million to make wireless internet available and will be free for its Optimum Online subscribers. Cablevision currently has some wireless hotspots, including Bay Shore, Port Jefferson, and Sayville.
Cablevision added that it will allow people with other services, such as video, news content with Newsday and News 12, data, and phone.
According to the Wall Street Journal interview with Cablevision’s chief operating officer Tom Ruthledge, “I do think if other companies do what we’re doing [in Wi-Fi], that you could envision a world where you wouldn’t need cellular service.” This is a direct challenge with Verizon for its celluar service and FiOS
